Like a painting come to life, ‘Quadrant and Sphere’ combines elements of graphic design, relief and sculpture to create a functional artwork of sorts – an interplay of different shapes, forms and materials.
The canvas, so to speak, is a small rectangle made in medium bronze – a rich brown metal that has a brushed finish, resulting in streaks that run vertically along its entire surface. Sitting at the top corner is a quadrant crafted in brushed brass – a more yellow-gold toned metal with streaks that run on the bias - its generous arc expanding beyond the limits of the backplate beneath it. At the opposite corner is a globe of frosted glass, which echoes the curve of the flat quadrant shape, whilst bringing a greater sense of dimensionality to the piece.
